about

Büşra Kayıkçı is a multi-disciplinary artist based in İstanbul. She started to study in different fields of art at early ages, such as piano, ballet, painting until college. In 2007 she attended the faculty of architecture and became an interior architect. With the inspiration and technique she brings from the world of design, Kayıkçı started to work on minimalist and neoclassical compositions for piano.

She released her first single ‘’Doğum’’ and debut album ‘’Eskizler’’ in November 2019. For her second single ‘’Tuna’’ she went to Klavins piano in Hungary and recorded it on a special piano design ‘’una corda’’. Later during the lockdown she released two more singles, ‘’Kuledibi No.1’’ and ‘’Shadows’’. She was selected as a finalist for the 27th Istanbul Jazz Festival, a young jazz contest. In October 2020 her piece Doğum was played at New York Theatre Ballet for a modern dance show and mentioned by Gia Kourlas from The New York Times.

Lately Kayıkçı has been trying to enrich her music by combining electro-acoustic elements and reaching the ideal of creating a new sound world.

"‘Qarib’ is the arabic translation of the word ‘boat’. The piece is basically named after a scene I watched for 2 months in summer of 2021 at my family’s summer house on the Aegean coast of Turkey. And it was a very tough summer for many other reasons. The scene which influenced me to write the piece is very minimalistic. Pure, glassy, indigo colored sea with a boat of a fisherman on it. It is a destination we spent our summers for 30 year, gives the feeling of belonging and my biggest relief on that spot has always been watching this boat gliding in the middle of the sea as it was watching me back with generosity and understanding. It was making me meditate every single time, filled with peace. When the vacation was over and I was back home to my piano, the melody came out suddenly in a very natural and instinctive way. And I strongly felt that inspiration was exactly coming from that boat scene. So I decided to name it Qarib. Later I’ve discovered that Qarib (as it’s pronounced in Turkish- Karib) also refers to one of the name’s of God in Islam which means ‘’the One who is closest to mankind, by His hearing, seeing, knowing, and witnessing’’ This is an amazing coincidence for me because watching that boat and meditating with it was absolutely getting me closer and closer each day."
