Recently named “the piano poet” by Vogue Magazine, Malakoff Kowalski was born to Persian parents in Boston, USA and raised in Hamburg, Germany. He currently resides in Berlin—where his latest solo piano album Onomatopoetikawas recorded and mixed by Nils Frahm at his Funkhaus Studio. A follow up record titled Piano Aphorisms is announced for summer 2022.

In his concerts Kowalski performs in the most reduced manner possible: black darkened auditoriums, only a tiny reading lamp above the grand piano, complete silence, no applause between the pieces. “I am living in a state of constant overstimulation. Most of us do. The pace, the tone, the volume, the amount of impressions. Overkill. It has become unbearable for me. When I sit at the piano everything else disappears. As if I was in an empty movie theater with no movie being shown.”

Kowalski has also been working as a film and theater composer—his newest project being Get Lost, a Hollywood feature film adapting Alice in Wonderland, starring Ella Bleu Travolta, James Cromwell and Terrence Howard.

"The “Abstrahism in B-flat minor” is a miniature I specifically wrote and recorded for 2022's Piano Day. Around the time I composed the piece I discovered a 1975 album by Wilhelm Kempff named “A Bach Recital”. The fugal opening and the following variations were certainly derived from my excitement over this beautiful record. If you will there's also some Frederic Mompou happening. But most of all it's a celebration of an invention we all love so dearly: the piano."
